Parents: Why summer reading is important
During the summer children experience something called the “Summer Slide.” This means that on average they lose about 22% of what they learned during the previous school year.
When children go back to school their teachers can spend up to 2 months catching them back up.
What can you as a parent do to help your child keep what they know and be ready to go back to school?
Research shows that the best thing you can do is to have your child participate in the library’s summer reading program.
The library’s summer reading program is the easiest and most fun way to keep kids ready to learn.
This program is for school-age children ages seven to eleven years old. Children should read and log their time. Log the reading time for every 20 minutes of reading on the paper log or here on the website. Children will earn a certificate of participation for reading up to 600 minutes. Children who read fewer than 600 minutes will receive a certificate of participation. Children who read 600 minutes or more will receive a certificate of participation and a prize.
