Parents should log the reading time for every 30 minutes of reading on the reading log. Children will recieve a small prize just for joining the program and a prize for completing the program by reading for the full 600 minutes. The program begins June 21st and ends August 14th. In addition to the reading log, each parent will also be given a special Read Around the Alphabet Game Card to win coupons for additional family prize drawings.

Why reading is important

Research shows that children who are read to early and often will develop stronger language and reading skills that will help them be successful throughout their lives.

Children build crucial skills when they are read to early. These skills include vocabulary development, ability to understand and follow a story, and word sounds recognition (phonological awareness). When children enter school, reading during the summer helps them be ready for each new school year.

The library’s summer reading program is the easiest and most fun way to get and keep kids ready to learn.
