A Special Message about the Summer Reading Program
Last summer, more than 267,000 Pennsylvania school-age children participated statewide in library-sponsored summer reading programs. Studies show that summer reading helps to improve comprehension, vocabulary, and proficiency enabling students to return to school in the fall with greater retained skills and more ready to continue academic progress.
Libraries provide FREE access to a variety of books for every level of reading ability. And unlike bookstores and other commercially sponsored reading programs designed primarily to sell books, library-sponsored summer reading clubs incorporate standards supported by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Beat the Summer Slide,
Build an Eight Book Bridge
Losing reading skills over the summer is called the "summer slide". Reading as few as eight books creates a bridge between June and September. The James V. Brown Library and every other library in the Lycoming Library System make it easy and fun for your child to build an eight-book bridge. Your library offers well-planned, fun summer reading programs for our community's youngsters at no additional cost to parents. Read about the eight book bridge here!
