Information for seniors

GAPAC - Grams and Paps Acting as Caregivers
- No registration required.
Are you a grandparent or great-grandparent who has become the primary caregiver for you grandchildren? If so, this program is just the thing. The last Thursday of each month from 1:00 to 2:30pm, - in the Family Place Room.

The Library has a great deal of material of interest to Seniors . There are books on retirement and financial planning and a large collection of books and videos on health issues.

While you are at the Circulation Desk, ask about our Senior library card. This card currently entitles you to discounts at Otto's Book Store.

A primary resource for Seniors is the Large Print Collection located on the fourth floor of the library. Many of the titles in this collection are popular fiction. Some of the books on health of particular interest to Seniors are located there.

Another service of James V. Brown Library is the Bookmobile, which visits nursing homes and retirement communities on alternating weeks. Anyone can use this bookmobile, but the major patron base is senior citizens. Also ask about the Bravo program - Readers no longer physically able to come to the library themselves may join the BRAVO program. BRAVO volunteers will select and deliver library materials to readers in nursing homes, private residences or retirement communities. BRAVO also serves the short term disabled reader.

A simplified Internet program for seniors called Generations on Line is available for free public access at the Brown Library. Using familiar images and large type instructions, the program guides seniors who have no computer experience through four basic Internet functions: electronic mail (email), discussion (threaded chat), a multi-lingual search by Alta Vista and links to other sites. A significant feature of Generations on Line is Memories: Generation to generation, specially designed to link school children with seniors, tapping their wisdom, experiences, and knowledge in an oral history and culture exchange.

Computers with internet access are located on the fourth floor of the Brown Library, (elevator accessible) and are available free to seniors during regular operating hours.
